Revitalisation of the inner city and refurbishment of a Plattenbau housing estate

Inner city initiative “Gotha lebt”

“Gotha lebt” (Gotha lives) is an inner city initiative of the City of Gotha that was established in June 2006 with the support of its redevelopment agency – WOHNSTADT GmbH. The goal is to close building gaps and eliminate vacancies through specialised mediation between property owners, on the one side, and potential moneylenders and developers on the other. The available plots are allocated to planners from the region for the development of initial designs and use concepts. This has proved to be very helpful in the search for prospective builders. A next step was intensive promotion of the plots with planning on site and in the press. An information office was established in the development area as a centre for the work of the “Gotha lebt” initiative. For interested building developers, the City of Gotha’s redevelopment agency, Wohnstadt Thüringen, is at the ready with extensive offers of guidance and of assistance in the search for a suitable property, the right planning concept, or financing opportunities. By taking this new path, the City of Gotha expects to gain further impetus and an even stronger stabilisation of its inner city.

The renovation and modernisation of another Plattenbau housing estate in Gotha’s old town is presented as another project with facilities that are in part barrier-free. Project development as well as planning and construction supervision was in the hands of the residential town, developer was the Gotha housing cooperative. The construction lasted 14 months.

This project was discussed at the Baukultur Workshops.
