Headquarters of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur

On 17 March 2011, after 15 months of construction, the mayor of the City of Potsdam, Jann Jakobs, hands over the new foundation headquarters in Schiffbauergasse 3 in Potsdam to the Federal Foundation of Baukultur.

In a ceremonial act, Jann Jakobs, Rainer Bomba (State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development), Jörg Vogelsänger (Minister for Infrastructure and Agriculture of the State of Brandenburg), Erich Jesse (executive director of the redevelopment agency Pro Potsdam), and Michael Braum (Chair of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur) as well as architect Jörg Springer (Springer Architekten, Berlin) and landscape architect Jürgen Weidinger (Weidinger Landschaftsarchitekten, Berlin) jointly cut the ribbon, thereby ceremoniously opening the new spaces for use by the Baukultur Foundation.

In 2006, the City of Potsdam successfully applies to host the new seat of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur with a prominent lakefront location on the Tiefer See, a part of the Potsdam cultural landscape that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Together with the State of Brandenburg, the city prevails against well-known candidates such as Weimar, Leipzig, Görlitz, Bonn, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, and Stuttgart. On 26 October 2006, the resolution of the German Bundestag is adopted on the establishment of the Federal Foundation of Baukultur with headquarters in Potsdam.

The conversion of the former Prussian barracks and industrial site on Schiffbauergasse exemplifies current urban redevelopment issues. The aim of the competition held in 2008 in coordination between the Federal Government, the City of Potsdam, and Potsdam’s redevelopment agency is to yield an exemplary concept for the renovation, rehabilitation, interior design, and landscape design of the “Husarenvilla” and its immediate surroundings.
