In the Mühlenviertel (Mill Quarter), mixed use plays an important role. Unlike the first neighbourhood developments in Tübingen’s Südstadt district (Loretto site and French Quarter), where non-residential uses were prescribed for all ground-floor spaces, in Mühlenviertel’s residential and mixed-use areas, commercial uses are mandatory on the ground floor only in places of special urban significance.

A central square near a former machine warehouse forms the new centre of the neighbourhood. In order to enliven the square, the ground floors of the surrounding buildings are not used for housing. Commercial uses, offices, restaurants and bars, and social facilities radiate out into the square. Besides the areas with a small-scale mix, accommodation of businesses with larger space needs is possible at a larger scale in the adjacent commercial zone.
