Baukultur Salon on 9 December 2015

Ortsbild – Besser bauen im Alltag

Bundesstiftung Baukultur

Especially in rural areas, the image of place decisively shapes the character of a village or town. Often one thinks of a community’s historic centre when talking about a place. At the edges of town, however, business parks and single-family housing are developed, often accommodating more people than the town centre.
What is therefore meant today when speaking of the “image of place”? How is it comprised? How can it be maintained, cultivated, and expanded? Uneven developments, such as in Brandenburg, where by 2030 the total population will decline by 10% while communities in the suburbs of Berlin continue to grow, call into question traditional village and town structures. How, against this backdrop, the image of a place can have a lasting effect on the life in that place, instead of depicting mere reconstruction or cosmetics, and how contemporary construction can be a source of enrichment, will be the topic of discussion on 9 December 2015 in Potsdam.
The Baukultur Salon takes place as part of the “Baukultur konkret” research project, which is conducted by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR), with support from the Federal Foundation of Baukultur.
